The Gangotri Glacier is a significant glacier located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. The glacier is situated in the Garhwal Himalayas, in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. The glacier stretches approximately 30 kilometers (19 miles) and has an average width of about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). The glacier is not only a vital water source for the Ganges River but also a popular site for trekking and mountaineering enthusiasts. It holds significant religious importance for Hindus, as it is believed to be the origin of the Ganges River. Gangotri is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, with snow-capped peaks, dense forests, and the serene Bhagirathi River flowing through the area.

 Altitude: Gangotri is situated at an elevation of about 3,048 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level.

Travel Tips

Best Time to Visit: The best time to visit Gangotri is from May to October. The temple is generally closed from November to April due to heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions.

Accommodation: Basic to moderate accommodation options are available in and around Gangotri, including guesthouses, dharamshalas, and lodges. It’s advisable to make prior arrangements, especially during the peak pilgrimage season.

Health and Safety: Be prepared for high altitude and cold temperatures. Carry warm clothing and ensure you are acclimatized to avoid altitude sickness. Also, ensure you have sufficient supplies of food and water, especially if undertaking treks.
